The Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded this album in 1959, and Columbia Records was initially unenthusiastic. Brubeck had ventured away from the classic 3/4 and 4/4 time and actively tried out new things. The result was enormously successful and, contrary to the opinion of the critics at the time, not a betrayal of jazz. Or to put it bluntly: the album is really good, even though so many people like it. The album also features Paul Desmond's famous song Take Five .

This version is released as a hybrid SACD with a remaster by Bernie Grundman. After lengthy negotiations, Columbia managed to be persuaded to use the original cover of the stereo release with the two arrows. The re-issue sounds very dynamic and is tonally a bit brighter than the K2HD of this title, which is also available. Fine nuances in the drum work in particular come into their own here and the spatial representation succeeds very well.

A note by Paul Desmond is published in the accompanying manual, in which he describes how he came up with 5/4 time. Originally he wanted to write a perfect opening for drummer Joe Morello and used the mechanical click of a slot machine that he used in Reno, NV for a long time. Ultimately, he hopes to generate at least $47 from the rights in a row so that he can recoup his loss on the slot machine. That must have been manageable.

We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" CD/DVD conditioner for a further sound improvement.
